  • Ghost gear becomes crocheted sea turtle

The next miniature crochet sculpture is an orange sea turtle. After I made the small fish I wanted to try something else, something more complex. So I made her after I saw a documentary about how fishing nets especially ghost nets affect sea turtles. Unfortunately they get tangled up and get hurt or worse can’t swim to the surface anymore to breath. With this art I want to do something for the oceans even if it is very small at the moment. I want to make something good out of these animal death traps which are floating around.

In memory of all the sea turtles out there.

  • This is the 6th fish I made so far. He is a little bigger than the previous ones. I took the blue thread again and orange for the highlights. The material comes from collected ghost nets. It was really fun to make those guys so I guess I will make more of them and other sea life. Fiske No 6. 🎨🧶

  • When I made this little fish I thought of a pufferfish. In the end he became a goldfish, which I find cool because I never thought about the classic goldfish we all know. That’s the great opportunity when you stay curious about what the art you make tells about yourself. Fiske No 5. 🎨🧶🐡

  • Fiske No 4. This time I took blue and green threads. I like the two colours together they fit nicely but it was slightly more complicated because the two threads had different thicknesses. I did this already when I made Fiske No 2. but there it was the other way around and easier. 🧵🧶🎨

  • This little guy is more like the first one I made. Still he is a bit different, with some fishlike lips and longer. Looking forward to experiment more and to create more of these small guys. Fiske No 3. 🎨🧶

  • While procrastinating I made this little guy. I collected so called ghost nets and old ship ropes at the beach during a trip to Texel, NL. They call this kind of collecting ‘jutten’ and it has a long tradition. It’s my first try; Fiske No 1.🧶🎨

  • Today I found these three in the forest. They are so beautiful and the color combination is amazing. Again a lichen, then seed capsules from Medicago sativa and a orange brown moth.

  • I found these yesterday. The three stink bugs on the sidewalk in the city, the dung beetle, bumblebee and lichen during my evening walk in the forest. The dung beetle is the biggest I ever saw nearly the double of a normal one.
